Gawthorpe Peacock Decoration

Phillipa Turnbull
Beginner

This charming woodland scene is a detail from one of a series of interpretations recreated by Phillipa based on the jewel in the crown of the Gawthorpe Textile Collection and just one of Rachel Kay Shuttleworth’s heroic embroidery achievements, a set of bed hangings and pelmets embroidered by Rachel for her own Elizabethan four-poster bed in the Huntroyd Room in Gawthorpe Hall.

About the Design

Gawthorpe Peacock Decoration

This design is a detail from the recently released ‘Gawthorpe Peacock’ design. In this, a more accessible version of the larger design, Phillipa has adapted Rachel's vibrant and confident peacock, a favourite animal which frequently appears in Miss Rachel’s designs.

Rachel owned a stuffed peacock with a mechanical action, which she would wind up and set away strutting across the floor, much to the amusement of the younger members of her family.

This design is suitable for beginner/intermediate crewel embroiderers and for those who wish for an introduction to our Gawthorpe Collection of Crewel Work Kits which recreate the magnificent crewel work created by Miss Rachel.
