2025 Online Courses - FAQs

1. How will the courses be taught?

The courses will be taught live on Zoom with sessions taking place according to each group's schedule. Each session will be 4 hours long with a break in the middle (some sessions, such as the follow up session at the end, will be shorter.)

2. How many groups will be taught?

There will be 2 groups for each course taught at different times - one is usually suitable for a UK/EU timezone, and the second for a North American timezone. If you are in a timezone that is incompatible for the times available, you may choose to join and make use of the recordings at a time that is comfortable for you.

3. How much access will I have to the tutor between classes?

The tutor will be available to answer your questions and review your progress on our private community space (hosted on Circle). You will also be able to interact with students in your group on this platform.

4. What other equipment will I need to purchase?

All three courses require the use of a slate frame. Kate's Feller Mirror course requires a 24 inch slate frame. The size of frame required for Natalie and Zina's Book courses will be 16 or 18 inches, to be confirmed soon.

Our recommended suppliers of slate frames are Jenny Adin-Christie in the UK and Carrie Roberts of Ecclesiastical embroidery in North America.

You may also like to purchase an embroidery light with magnifier or magnifying eyewear. We recommend the PURElight 3-in-1 magnifyer and light. Available in most territories online or from local craft suppliers.

5. What will the Book Binding tuition consist of?

When the embroidery tuition has ended, a time will be schedule for the group to begin the book binding segment (with reasonable time added so that embroidery can be be completed.)

Book binding tuition will begin with a live introduction to introduce the tutor and the materials. After that a series of recorded tutorials will be sent to students for to watch at their own pace. A live follow up session will then be scheduled within a reasonable time afterwards.

6. How much of the Binding process will be taught?

The book binding tuition will involve attaching your embroidery to a pre-prepared book 'block', which will be hand-made in the UK by our book binding expert (your tutor). It completed to precise historic specifications and based on the dimensions of your finished embroidery.

The book block you will receive as part of the course will be blank so that you can use your book for your own purposes. We are hoping to reproduce the contents of the Book of Days, which is universally useful and very charming. If this is possible, it will be available to both courses as an optional extra towards the end of the course. 

All adhesives used in the book binding process will be non-toxic and applied in a way that does not damage your embroidery.

7. Are we expected to prepare a book 'block' ourselves?

No, preparation of a book 'block is a complex process that requires specialist tools and is outside of the scope of this course.

8. I am interested in the Lady Anne's Festival on February 2025. Will there be any time clashes with the course timetables?

No, we have engineered the festival to avoid classes with the course timetables. If you would lik e to check what will be offered during the festival, you can check our Festival page here. Prices will be between about £100 and £300 per workshop depending on the length (1, 2 or 3 days).

9. Can I see an image of the reproduced book?

The replica books have not yet been completed. All images are of the original antique books.

10. Will a practice piece be provided with course kits?

Yes, you will receive a second piece of fabric to practice your stitching on. You will be able to choose later if you would like a blank piece or a duplicate of the book design, which will carry an additional charge.

11. Will a payment plan be offered?

Yes, at check out you will be able to select if you would like to pay in full or in three parts.

12. Will I be able to purchase a replica frame for the Feller Frame Course

Yes, we have had solid oak frames made to the same design as the original mirror. The price is £900 and you will be able to purchase this during the course.
