Inspired by an interesting early-20th Century sampler of stars, this design has been cleverly re-imagined by Natalie as a festive decoration. Your finished embroidery will be a double sided ornament, stitched on a deep red silk and enhanced by a hand-made tassel with 24-karat beads.

About the Design

Gawthorpe Star Ornament

This design is inspired by a sampler of goldwork stars held in the archives of the Gawthorpe Textile Collection, item no.1157. The artifact is part of the Purchas Bequest, a collection of items donated to Gawthorpe by XX Purchas, and is thought to have been stitched in the early 20th Century.

The original star sampler is simply made on heavy calico and was perhaps an exercise in size for use on a larger ecclesiastical piece. During this fun 1-day class, Natalie will take you through each stage of the preparation, stitching, and finishing process.
