Gawthorpe Oak Tree & Snail

Phillipa Turnbull
Intermediate

The Gawthorpe Oak Tree & Snail design is an oft-repeated rural scene featured on the pelmets of Rachel Kay Shuttleworth’s famous bed hangings made for her beautiful 16th Century Tester bed given to her my her parents on her 21st birthday. The oak tree, which represents strength and loyalty, is shown grounded in hummocks. A curious snail completes this charming, and typically out of scale, Jacobean scene.

About the Design

Gawthorpe Oak Tree & Snail

This Rachel Kay Shuttleworth design is a masterclass in Long & Short soft shading using a variety of autumnal tones and a few unusually bright complimentary colours. French Knots, Coral Stitch, Thorn Stitch, Pistil, Lazy Daisy, Crewel Stem, Raised Satin Stitch add texture and depth to this bold, naturalistic scene.

In this 2-day class, you will learn how to stitch with confidence as you complete repeated Oak leaf motifs in 2-ply Appleton's wools. The additional of the snail adds humour and charm as well as the challenge of buttonhole stitch worked on an ever decreasing spiral on the shell.

This design is the perfect introduction to the Gawthorpe Crewel Work range, providing a sample of some of Rachel's favourite techniques in the the Arts & Crafts style we was so fond of.
