Crewel Work Kits

"Hello Phillipa and Harry,

I hope you and yours are all well... I just wanted to drop a note to let you know that the wonderful kits (an understatement!) and lap-stand arrived today. They are so beautiful.

The Crewel Work Company's kits are better than the best kits that were available 40 years ago (during the 1970's embroidery craze), and they are certainly the best available today! The designs are superb, and the wools (colours and quality) are simply amazing. Thank you, and please keep it up!"

Warmest regards,

Brent`s Mum!

"Hello! Great thanks for this gorgeous kit. It was a real pleasure for me to stitch it!"

Andrée Domeyne.

"Dear Philipa, please find attached 4-photographs taken today of the Jacobean Cushion that I have recently completed. I hope you like them as much as I have enjoyed sewing them it."

Kind regards, Mary S, Huntly

"Dear Phillipa, I emailed you from your lovely website. Since I was unable to send you pictures of the finished model there I am sending them to you here as attachments. Thanks again for sending the model kit and allowing me the pleasure in stitching it. I did practice a bit first. I feel much more confident to do the soft shading now (my fear in class)! Thanks for your help."

Fondly, Sonya

Dear Phillipa

I ordered your "Jacobean sampler" kit in September last year. Life is busy, so I didn’t start work on it until over Christmas.

I feel I must drop you a line telling you that, in my opinion, the kit is of the highest quality. Everything is beautifully packaged (I particularly like the nice little carrybag that comes with it – this sometimes holds my knitting as well!) and the instructions are clear and detailed without being too complex. The colours of the Appleton wool are exquisite.

Best of all, I am thoroughly enjoying stitching the design and will definitely be ordering again from you later in the year.`

Regards

Jane Smith (March 2010)

"I am still embroidering the main flower which is is giving me great pleasure. I am finding your kits very helpful to follow and enjoyable to do."

Yours Rupert

"Dear Ms. Turnbull

I'd like to thank you for your wonderful catalog. I enjoy looking at it for inspiration. You're obviously a wonderfully gifted artist, and I'm so glad you're using your gifts to promote the art of needlework. Thank you, again, for offering your talents to the world of needlework. I applaud you!"

Sincerely

Carol S

"Hello from Australia! I completed my Mellerstain firescreen this week and delighted with the result - it is now being framed and the framer loved it - I learned so much in Brisbane - can't wait to finish the Oakappletree which I started yesterday."

Kindest regards Ronda

"Hello Phillipa and Harry I am thrilled to be able to say your wonderful parcel arrived yesterday morning - your PDQ service is PDQ! The debit has gone through successfully, and I thank you sincerely for your kindness, and the extremely efficient way you run your business. What a team. I haven't threaded the needle yet, and will wait till I have watched the DVD a couple of times and read through the instructions. Once again, thank you very, very much."

Workshops & Retreats

"Hello Phillipa, Firstly, thank you so much for a most informative and enjoyable E.G. workshop last week, for your enthusiasm, advice and encouragement, and also for your company on the train and tube. I was as good as my word and wrote up all my notes when I got back to the flat on Friday evening, which was just as well as I've not been able to do any stitching since then, so now I have a permanent reminder of all that you talked about to which I will be able to refer when necessary. I am so glad too that I waited until your workshop before trying Jacobean crewel work as you have given me the foundation in the traditional stitches and design elements that I was looking for. I do congratulate you on all the research you have done and thank you for passing it on so well. Secondly, thank you for the Heartsease Pansy kit which arrived on Saturday morning as promised - it's lovely and even hubby (who generally makes little comment on my stitching) made a spontaneous positive comment - "nice colours"! Thank you too for your kind note with it - indeed it will, I'm sure, provide me with many hours of enjoyment.

Best wishes, Sue T from Sherborne

"Dear Phillipa, Thankyou for two days of very enjoyable stitching, it was a pleasure to have you as a tutor. Hears hoping I will join another class with you in 2008 at a Castle."

"Hi Phillipa! Just a note to say many thanks for last Monday's workshop. (I am the very hard of hearing student!) Apart from the headache (caused by turning my neck to watch you, instead of turning my chair to watch you, now learnt from that mistake!) this workshop was the best I've ever attended. It was such a refreshing change to study in a calm, quiet atmosphere and I wish all teachers' asked their students to not chatter. It made the learning experience a very pleasant one, instead of my usual having to really concentrate and tire very quickly. I also loved the importance you placed on looking after the body; how nice that someone takes the time to teach this vital skill. If there is any time when you visit Norwich/Norfolk again, please add me to your "list" of e-mail addresses, so I can attend. I cannot wait to start my kit (have to wait til christmas!) and I will remember everything you taught us. As that saying goes, "....show me and I will remember" via your super method of drawing on the board! Finally, I am ashamed to say, my courage failed me when I heard your comment on needing a necklace for your glasses. My friend and I make these for our local opticians. So, I hope you will accept a pair with my compliments from a very impressed student! I will send them via the address on the brochure you gave us (Pembroke House?). Many thanks again, bye for now."

Lindsey

(This lady sent me the most beautiful present which I wear and can now find my spectacles – my family and I thank her!)

"Phillipa Many thanks for a great day on Saturday. You are a fun teacher and very generous sharing all your knowledge and experience. I learnt masses - I hope to put it into practice. I realise how many bad practices I have gathered over the years - I will stop stroking the wool - I will use a big enough needle (not the one nearest to hand) - I will use short (correct length for me) threads. Many thanks again."

Elisabeth

"Dear Phillipa Just to thank you for a wonderful class on Saturday at York, I learnt a tremendous amount and I have almost finished the piece, a bit of a record for a day class, this will not join the great unfinished!! It is a very good design for the filling samples, and I must say my long & short has greatly improved.I have wanted to attend a class with you since you came to the Darlington E.Guild, so ambition realised. Perhaps I will get over to one at Appleby,I didn't leave my Email as I can never remember it but could you take it off here and add to your list please. I was interested in the Lady Anne Pillowe because my son became very interested in her when we lived in Scotland and travelled that way often. Many thanks"

DVD

"Phillipa, I watched your video several times. I am thrilled with the instruction in both and am eager to start a project. Here’s a review of your video I posted online. I hope you enjoy it.

Phillipa Turnbull teaches basic crewel stitches, breaking up each lesson with a brief background on other aspects of crewel such as linen and yarn manufacture. I feel I learned as well from this video as having an expert sit next to me. She speaks clearly and concisely while demonstrating the before, during and after of creating a stitch. My husband sat down and watched it with me making points like how taut she kept the linen. So, even someone not interested in the subject can enjoy this video. This video even features a dramatic arc! Phillipa Turnbull sewed a bedspread for the Queen Mum. The end of the video shows the ceremony where she places the bedspread on the bed."
